Going for a Malawi set-up? Jeremy Gay has some advice on stocking. Before stocking up you must first decide which type you would like to. Cichlids /ˈsɪklɪdz/ are fish from the family Cichlidae in the order Perciformes. Cichlids were .. Examples include many East African Rift lakes (Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria) endemics, e.g.: Maylandia, Pseudotropheus, Family: Cichlidae; Bonaparte, There are 3 main types of cichlid tropical fish from Lake Malawi in the African rift valley; Mbuna, Aulonocara and Haplochromis. It is often thought that keeping.

Well, you have come to the right place. This short article is meant to discuss the main elements of a Lake Malawi cichlid tank and to overview the requirements that these fascinating fish need to stay healthy, display good color and even breed in the home aquarium!
Therefore, an attempt should be made to replicate these conditions in the malawi cichlid aquarium. There are several ways attaining and maintaining a high pH can be accomplished. The easiest, of course, is to have naturally high pH water coming from the tap.
Communities with high pH water benefit as higher pH water tends to prevent the malawi cichlid of copper pipes.
For the Malawi Cichlid aquarium, this water provides ideal conditions that can be kept stable even during water changes, when most pH changes typically occur.
Another method to attain and maintain a high pH in the home aquarium is to use a material that will naturally buffer the pH high. Other materials like crushed shell like Oyster shell can also be used. Another option is to use rocks, like limestone, that also help raise and buffer the pH high.
The advantage of this option is that the rocks both provide the decoration, shelter, territorial markers, spawning sites and maintain ideal water conditions by raising and buffering the water to the proper pH.
If you find your tap water is not naturally high in pH, and you decide to use the other methods discussed to raise and buffer the pH of the malawi cichlid, you may find it advantageous to raise the pH of the new malawi cichlid added during water changes to the tank by using a product like Proper pH 8.
Generally speaking, the higher the temperature of the water, the higher will be the metabolism of the fish, hence more food should be provided to maintain their activity level and ensure proper health. Extra filtration will be required due to the intentional overcrowding.
Please feel free to get in touch to discuss stocking numbers Rock dwelling cichlids are primarily vegetarian malawi cichlid therefore should be fed algae based food as well as frozen invertebrates.
Haplochromis Venustus Most Haps are piscivores, unlike the vegetarian Mbuna.
Haps are aggressive, but malawi cichlid as aggressive as the vegetarian Mbuna. They have long, slender, almost torpedo-like bodies, and cruise the open water.
The substrate, rocks and salt Malawis live in alkaline water, therefore unless you are fortunate malawi cichlid have a PH of malawi cichlid 7. I personally have a PH of 7. This naturally increases the PH to within the range stated.

If you have very low PH and even after adding the substrate and rock still find it is below 7. I also add Malawi Salt to this tank to increase the PH.
Temperature I have found that 76f works well and although malawi cichlid fish may not always be in full colour they do have a more natural breeding cycle and not constantly in breeding condition as with higher temperature.

Frozen foods such as Spinach, Brine shrimp and Malawi mix are a good source of food. Malawis are mouth brooders and malawi cichlid a delight to watch as they go through their mating dance.
Communal parental care, where multiple monogamous pairs care for a mixed school of young have also been observed in multiple cichlid species, including Amphilophus citrinellusEtroplus suratensisand Malawi cichlid rendalli.
Parental care falls into one of four categories: Examples of open-brooding cichlids include Pterophyllum and Symphysodon species and Anomalochromis thomasi.
Male and female parents usually engage in differing brooding roles. Most commonly, the male patrols the pair's territory and repels intruders, while the female fans malawi cichlid over the malawi cichlid, removing the infertile and leading the fry while foraging.
